The STARRETT 54041 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 5/32 inches thick, 8 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 6.39 pounds. The tight thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches makes it suitable for applications where dimensional accuracy is critical before and after heat treatment. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers rely on O1 flat stock for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools where oil-quench hardening is part of the process.
This flat stock is used in job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance machining environments. O1 tool steel is well suited for applications requiring good wear resistance and moderate toughness after hardening. The 8-inch width and 18-inch length provide sufficient material for a range of tooling blanks and fixture components. The squareness specification of 0.003 inches per inch on all edges supports accurate layout and machining without additional dressing in many cases.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where AISI Type O1 material is specified.
O1 tool steel flat stock is worked by machinists and toolmakers using conventional milling, grinding, and EDM equipment. Heat treatment should follow established AISI O1 oil-quench procedures performed by qualified personnel with appropriate furnace and quench equipment. Grind or machine to final dimensions before hardening where tolerances allow. Follow applicable shop safety procedures when handling sharp-edged stock and hot workpieces during heat treatment.
