The STARRETT 54015 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 0.125 inches thick, 8 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a finished weight of 5.1 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional consistency is critical before heat treatment. Machinists, tool and die makers, and fabrication shops work with this material to produce punches, dies, gauges, and similar hardened tooling components.
O1 tool steel is a general-purpose oil-hardening grade valued for its machinability in the annealed state and its ability to hold a sharp edge after hardening. This flat stock is used in job shops, tool rooms, and manufacturing facilities handling low-to-medium production tooling. The 8-inch width and 18-inch length provide enough stock for multiple tooling blanks from a single piece. It is appropriate for applications that do not require the higher red-hardness of more alloyed tool steels such as D2 or A2.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for tool room, die shop, and precision fabrication use where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
O1 tool steel flat stock is worked by machinists and tool and die makers using conventional milling, grinding, and sawing equipment in the annealed condition. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Always allow stock to reach ambient temperature before precision measuring. Handle with care to avoid nicking finished edges, which can affect squareness tolerances.
