The STARRETT 54005 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 0.125 inches thick, 1.75 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 1.11 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, supporting close-tolerance work where dimensional consistency is critical before and after heat treatment. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance shops rely on O1 stock for fabricating punches, dies, jigs, and custom tooling that will be hardened in an oil quench.
O1 oil-hardening tool steel is a general-purpose grade known for good machinability in the annealed state and predictable hardening response. This flat stock is suited for short-run tooling, gauge blanks, wear plates, and fixture components in job shops, production facilities, and maintenance departments. The 18-inch length provides a practical starting blank for a wide range of tooling projects without requiring a full bar cut. The annealed condition allows conventional machining prior to heat treatment.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat blank suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision fixture fabrication where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Material is supplied in the soft annealed condition and should be machined to near-final dimensions before heat treatment. Oil quenching and tempering should be performed by a qualified heat treater or machinist following AISI O1 heat treatment guidelines. Wear appropriate PPE when cutting or grinding tool steel. Deburr all edges after machining and before handling.
