The STARRETT 53989 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 3/32 inches thick, 8 inches wide, and 18 inches long and weighs 3.82 pounds. O1 tool steel is known for its excellent machinability in the annealed state and its ability to hold a fine edge after oil-quench hardening. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making this stock suitable for applications where dimensional consistency before heat treatment is critical. Machinists and tool and die makers rely on this material for gauges, cutting tools, punches, and wear components.
This flat stock is used in machine shops, tool rooms, and fabrication environments where O1 oil-hardening steel is the specified material. The 8-inch width and 18-inch length provide enough stock for a range of tooling blanks without requiring additional breakdown from plate. It is appropriate for both one-off tooling projects and low-volume production of hardened components. Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by a qualified machinist using appropriate feeds, speeds, and coolant for tool steel. All heat treatment, including oil quenching and tempering, must follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 steel and should be performed by qualified personnel. Wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or handling bar stock with sharp edges. Verify final dimensions after rough machining and prior to heat treatment, as hardening will produce minimal but measurable dimensional change.
