The STARRETT 53988 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for tool and die makers, machinists, and metalworking professionals who require a precision-ground blank ready for further machining, hardening, and finishing. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 3/32 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 18 inches long and weighs approximately 2.87 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where close dimensional control is required before heat treatment. O1 tool steel offers good machinability in the annealed state and responds predictably to oil-quench hardening.
This flat stock is used in the fabrication of punches, dies, gauges, fixtures, knives, and other tooling components where a tough, hardenable steel blank is the starting point. It is suited to job shops, tool rooms, and maintenance departments handling low-to-medium production tooling work. The 6-inch width and 18-inch length provide enough material for a range of medium-sized tooling applications without requiring large-bar handling equipment.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for tool room, die shop, and fixture fabrication applications requiring AISI Type O1 material.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed in the annealed state before oil-quench hardening. Heat treatment should be carried out by a qualified toolmaker or heat-treating professional following established procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel. Consult material safety data and applicable shop safety codes before processing.
