The STARRETT 53986 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, jig and fixture fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 3/32 inches thick, 4 inches wide, and 18 inches long and weighs 1.91 pounds. It ships in the annealed (soft) condition, ready for machining, then can be oil-quench hardened to achieve high surface hardness. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for close-tolerance toolroom work where dimensional consistency is critical before and after heat treatment.
This flat stock is used in tool and die shops, machine shops, and maintenance departments for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, blades, and custom tooling components. Always allow the part to reach ambient temperature before finish grinding to final dimensions.
