The STARRETT 53983 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. The blank measures 3/32 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 0.96 pounds. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining and subsequent oil-quench heat treatment. Dimensional tolerances are held tightly: thickness tolerance is plus or minus 0.001 inches, width tolerance is 0.000 to minus 0.005 inches, and length tolerance is plus 0.250 inches. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers rely on O1 stock for its consistent pre-hardened machinability and predictable oil-quench response.
O1 tool steel flat stock is well suited for shop-floor toolmaking and prototype tooling in both job shops and production facilities. Typical applications include blanking dies, punches, gauges, form tools, cutting tools, and precision fixtures where close dimensional control before heat treat is required. The 18-inch length accommodates a wide range of tool blanks without additional cutoff waste. This stock is sized for single-piece or small-quantity use with a minimum order quantity of one piece.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Cutting and machining should be performed in the annealed condition before heat treatment. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and cutting fluids when sawing or milling tool steel. Oil-quench heat treatment should be performed by a qualified heat treater following established procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Handle hardened pieces carefully to avoid edge chipping.
