The STARRETT 53982 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification, this flat stock measures 3/32 inches thick, 1-1/2 inches wide, and 18 inches long. Thickness tolerance is held to +/- 0.001 inches, making it well-suited for applications where close dimensional accuracy is required before heat treatment. Machinists and tool-and-die makers rely on O1 stock for its predictable oil-quench hardening characteristics and good wear resistance in the hardened state.
This flat stock is appropriate for fabricating cutting tools, punches, dies, gauges, and similar toolroom components in both job shop and production environments. The 18-inch length and 1-1/2-inch width provide workable material for a range of bench or machine operations. At 0.72 pounds per piece, it is easy to handle at the bench or on a surface grinder. One piece is supplied per package.
Designed as a standard-tolerance O1 tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolroom, die-making, and precision machining applications requiring oil-hardening material.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by a qualified machinist using appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for high-carbon steel. Hardening requires controlled furnace heat treatment followed by an oil quench — this process should only be performed by personnel trained in metallurgical heat treatment procedures. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or heat-treating tool steel. Verify final dimensions after any grinding operations, as stock may shift slightly during setup.
