The STARRETT 53966 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification, this flat stock measures 1/16 inch thick, 6 inches wide, and 18 inches long. It holds tight dimensional tolerances: thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches, width tolerance of minus 0.000 to minus 0.005 inches, and length tolerance of plus 0.250 inches. O1 tool steel offers good wear resistance and machinability in the annealed state, making it a dependable choice for flat tooling components that will be hardened after machining.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance departments requiring precision-ground or precision-rolled stock ready for layout, machining, and heat treating. It is commonly used to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, blades, and similar tooling components. Machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance technicians working on low-to-medium production tooling will find this stock appropriate for applications where oil-quench hardening is the specified heat treatment process.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking and die-making applications where O1 specification material is required.
Cutting, milling, drilling, and grinding should be performed while the stock is in the soft annealed state prior to heat treating. Use appropriate coolant during machining to prevent localized heating that could affect the material structure. Oil quenching for hardening should be performed by a qualified heat treater or toolmaker familiar with AISI O1 procedures. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting or grinding tool steel stock.
