The STARRETT 53956 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 1/16 inch thick, 1 inch wide, and 18 inches long, and weighs 0.32 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications that demand close dimensional control. Machinists and toolmakers rely on O1 stock for blanks, gauges, small dies, and cutting tools that will be heat treated after machining.
O1 tool steel is a general-purpose oil-hardening grade well suited to low-production tooling, jigs, fixtures, and precision parts. This flat bar size is commonly used in tool rooms and machine shops where small, precise components are rough-machined in the annealed state and then oil-quenched to achieve working hardness. The 18-inch length provides enough stock for multiple pieces or a single elongated component without excessive material waste.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general tool room and precision machining use where O1 grade material is specified.
Machining and heat treating of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists and tool and die makers familiar with O1 grade steel procedures. All cutting, grinding, and finishing operations should be completed before hardening and tempering. Eye protection and appropriate metalworking guards are required during machining. Consult material data sheets for heat-treat temperature ranges and quenching procedures prior to processing.
