The STARRETT 53940 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in precision toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and custom fixture applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 1/32 inch thick, 3 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches. The close dimensional tolerances make it suitable for applications where accurate stock removal and predictable hardening response are required. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metalworking professionals use O1 flat stock as a starting material for punches, dies, gauges, and wear components that require oil-quench hardening after machining.
This flat stock is suited for general toolroom use in job shops, production facilities, and maintenance departments. It is appropriate for both roughing and finish-machining prior to heat treatment. The 18-inch length provides a usable blank for small to medium tooling components, and the 3-inch width supports multiple part layouts from a single piece. Width tolerance is held to 0.000 to 0.005 inches under nominal, and length tolerance allows up to plus 0.250 inches over nominal with no undercut. Edge squareness is maintained at 0.003 inches per inch across all edges.

Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for high-carbon steel. Heat treatment, including oil quenching and tempering, should follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 and should be performed by personnel familiar with tool steel hardening practices. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or heat-treating steel stock. Inspect dimensions against print tolerances before beginning machining operations.
