The STARRETT 53937 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, punches, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification, this flat stock measures 1/32 inch thick, 1-1/2 inches wide, and 18 inches long. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inch, making it suitable for applications where dimensional accuracy before hardening matters. Machinists, tool and die makers, and fabricators working in job shops or maintenance environments typically stock this material for custom tooling and fixture components.
O1 tool steel is a general-purpose oil-hardening grade known for its good machinability in the annealed state and its ability to hold a keen edge after hardening and tempering. This flat stock is appropriate for producing small punches, blades, gages, and similar toolroom parts where moderate toughness and wear resistance are required. The 18-inch length provides sufficient stock for multiple short workpieces. At 0.24 pounds per piece, handling and storage are straightforward for bench or rack stock.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolroom, die shop, and precision fabrication use where O1 grade material in this size is specified.
Cutting and machining should be performed in the annealed state before heat treatment. Follow established AISI O1 hardening and tempering procedures, including proper preheat, austenitizing, and oil quench steps. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or heat-treating tool steel. Consult applicable shop safety standards and material data sheets for handling hardened steel components.
