The STARRETT 53936 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 1/32 inch thick, 1-1/4 inches wide, and 18 inches long. Made from AISI Type O1 tool steel, it is produced to tight dimensional tolerances and is intended for toolmaking, die making, jig and fixture fabrication, and precision machining applications. The material arrives in the annealed (soft) condition, ready for machining, then hardened and tempered by the user through an oil-quench heat treatment process. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making this stock suitable for applications where close dimensional control before heat treatment is critical.
This flat stock is used primarily in tool and die shops, machine shops, and metal fabrication environments. Typical applications include punches, dies, cutting blades, gauges, and small machine parts that require a hard, wear-resistant surface after heat treatment. Machinists and tool and die makers specify O1 tool steel flat stock when they need predictable dimensional stability through the hardening process and good machinability in the annealed state.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar for use in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where oil-quench heat treatment will be applied after final machining.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed with appropriate metalworking equipment; standard woodworking or general-purpose tools are not suitable. Heat treatment of O1 steel requires controlled furnace equipment and a proper oil-quench bath — this work is typically performed by a qualified toolmaker or heat treatment specialist. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when machining or heat-treating tool steel. Consult applicable shop safety standards and material safety data for tool steel handling.
