The STARRETT 53428 is a dial drop indicator designed for precision dimensional measurement in machining, assembly, and inspection applications. It covers a measuring range of 0 to 0.25 inches with a graduation of 0.001 inches, allowing technicians to detect small variations in surface height, runout, or part alignment. The dial face reads 0-100 on a white, no-glare satin finish dial measuring 1-11/16 inches in diameter. A revolution counter tracks cumulative travel across the 0.1-inch-per-revolution mechanism. The stainless steel stem measures 0.375 inches in diameter, and the jeweled bearing system supports repeatable, low-friction operation. An unbreakable crystal protects the dial face during shop use.
This drop indicator is suited for use on surface plates, comparator stands, magnetic base setups, and machine tool fixtures in precision metalworking, quality control, and general inspection environments. The lug back mounts directly to standard indicator holders and arms. A flat back is included for alternative mounting configurations. Machinists, tool and die makers, quality technicians, and metrology professionals typically deploy this indicator for workpiece setup, concentricity checks, and part-to-part comparison tasks.
Designed for use with standard indicator holders, magnetic bases, and comparator stands that accept a lug back or flat back dial indicator with a 0.375-inch stem diameter. AGD Group 1 classification.
Installation is performed by machinists, quality technicians, or metrology personnel using a standard indicator holder or magnetic base arm. Ensure the mounting arm is fully tightened and the indicator stem is oriented perpendicular to the measured surface for accurate readings. Do not exceed the rated measuring range, as overtravel can damage the internal mechanism. Handle the crystal and stem with care to preserve calibration integrity.
