The STARRETT 53311 is a dial drop indicator designed for precision linear measurement in trade and industrial applications. It covers a measurement range of 0 to 4 inches with a dial graduation of 0.001 inches per division and a range of 0.1 inches per revolution, making it suitable for inspecting runout, flatness, and surface variation. The dial face is 2-1/4 inches in diameter with a white, no-glare satin finish for clear readability in shop conditions. A built-in revolution counter tracks full spindle revolutions across the 4-inch range. The jeweled bearing system supports accurate and repeatable readings over extended use. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, quality control inspectors, and precision tradespeople are the primary users of this instrument.
The 53311 fits standard dial indicator holders, magnetic bases, and surface gauge arms via its 0.375-inch diameter stainless steel stem. The lug back mounting style is common in fixture and comparator stand setups found in machine shops, fabrication environments, and on-site alignment work. A flat back is included, providing an alternate mounting option when a lug is not required. The unbreakable crystal and rugged construction make it appropriate for use in active shop environments where incidental contact is likely. This indicator reads in English units and is calibrated in the AGD Group 2 format.
Designed for use with standard AGD Group 2 dial indicator holders, magnetic bases, and surface gauge arms that accept a 0.375-inch stem diameter. Flat back and lug back configurations are both supported with included hardware.
Mount the indicator using an appropriate holder or magnetic base before taking measurements; never force the stem into a holder that does not match the 0.375-inch stem diameter. Pre-load the spindle slightly against the work surface to ensure the needle is within the active measurement range before zeroing the dial. Protect the instrument from impact and avoid side-loading the stem, which can damage the jeweled bearing. No electrical power or special tools are required for setup.
