The STARRETT 53304 is a dial drop indicator designed for precision dimensional measurement in machine shop, toolroom, and quality control applications. It covers a measurement range of 0 to 1 inch with a dial graduation of 0.0005 inches, allowing technicians to detect very small deviations in surface position, runout, or alignment. The indicator features a 2.25-inch white dial with a 0-50 reading scale, a jeweled bearing mechanism for consistent accuracy, and a stainless steel stem with a diameter of 0.375 inches. A no-glare satin finish and unbreakable crystal face reduce visual fatigue during extended use. The unit ships with both a lug back and a flat back included.
This indicator is suited for use by machinists, tool and die makers, metrologists, and maintenance technicians performing setup, inspection, or in-process gauging. Typical applications include spindle runout checks, part flatness verification, fixture alignment, and surface comparator work on mills, lathes, surface plates, and inspection fixtures. The revolution counter tracks full spindle revolutions across the 1-inch total travel, making it straightforward to read cumulative displacement without losing count during longer traverses.
Designed as a standard AGD Group 2 dial drop indicator compatible with indicator holders, magnetic base arms, and surface gauge stems that accept a 0.375-inch stem diameter.
Dial drop indicators are installed by licensed machinists and quality technicians using magnetic bases, indicator holders, or snug-fit collet-style arms. Before mounting, ensure the workpiece and fixture are secure and the machine spindle or surface is stationary. Clamp the stem with enough grip to hold position without crushing the stainless steel stem. Do not exceed the rated 1-inch travel range, as over-travel can damage the jeweled bearing and rack mechanism.
