The STARRETT 52497 is a mechanical V anvil micrometer designed to measure the diameter of cutting tools with 5 flutes. It reads from 0.078 to 1 inch with a graduation of 0.0001 inch, making it suitable for high-precision inspection work. The V-shaped anvil cradles the tool while the carbide spindle contacts the opposing flute. A ratchet stop thimble ensures consistent measuring pressure, eliminating operator-to-operator variation. The satin chrome finish reduces glare under shop lighting. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and quality-control technicians use this instrument for verifying tap, reamer, and end mill geometry.
The 52497 is used in machine shops, tool rooms, and manufacturing environments where 5-flute cutting tools must be measured accurately. The V anvil geometry positions the tool so that the spindle contacts the cutting edge directly opposite the valley between two flutes, giving a true outer-diameter reading. It is appropriate for both incoming inspection of new tooling and wear monitoring of tools in service.
