The STARRETT 52117 is a mechanical depth micrometer designed for precise depth, step, and slot measurements in machining, toolmaking, and inspection applications. It covers a full 6-inch measurement range using a set of six interchangeable rods, each with a diameter of 0.125 inches. The thimble features a plain ratchet stop for consistent measuring pressure and repeatable readings. A ring-type knurled lock nut secures the spindle quickly for transfer measurements. Graduation is 0.001 inches with an accuracy of plus or minus 0.0001 to 0.0002 inches, making it suitable for close-tolerance work on the shop floor or in a metrology environment.
This depth micrometer is used in precision manufacturing, tool and die, and quality control settings where accurate depth readings are required on bored holes, counterbores, slots, and shoulders. The 2.5-inch base provides a stable reference surface across a range of workpiece geometries. Six rods allow the user to cover the full 6-inch range without swapping to a different instrument. A carrying case is included for storage and transport between jobs or inspection stations.
Designed as a standalone mechanical depth micrometer compatible with standard 0.125-inch diameter interchangeable rod sets used in depth micrometer applications across machining and inspection environments.
Depth micrometers are used by machinists, toolmakers, and quality control inspectors — no power source or licensed trade required. Before use, verify all rods are clean and fully seated, and zero the instrument on a flat reference surface. Do not over-tighten the lock nut, as this can affect spindle alignment and reading accuracy. Store rods in the provided case to prevent damage to measuring surfaces.
