The STARRETT 51292 is a single-leaf taper gage used to measure gaps, slots, and clearances with high precision. The blade is accurately tapered throughout its 6.25-inch length, allowing the technician to insert the leaf and read the gap directly off the graduated scale. Graduation is 0.001 inches, and the measurement range runs from 0.01 to 0.15 inches. The blade is machined from tool steel for durability and consistent dimensional accuracy across the measurement range. Machinists, millwrights, and maintenance technicians use this tool for bearing clearance checks, slot gaging, and precision shimming work. The part weighs 0.188 pounds.
The STARRETT 51292 is suited for precision measurement tasks in maintenance, manufacturing, and mechanical service environments. Common applications include checking bearing end-play and side clearances, verifying slot widths on machined components, and serving as a precision shim during assembly or alignment procedures. It is appropriate for both shop and field use wherever a fast, direct-reading gap measurement is needed without setup tooling.
Designed as a standard single-leaf taper gage for general mechanical and maintenance applications where direct gap measurement in the 0.01 to 0.15 inch range is required.
Taper gages are a hand tool and require no installation. Power down or de-energize any equipment before inserting the gage into a gap or bearing clearance. Insert the tapered blade slowly until snug resistance is felt, then read the measurement at the point of contact with the workpiece edge. Do not force the blade past resistance, as this can distort the reading or damage the gage.
