The STARRETT 51286 is a 4-leaf taper gage designed for direct measurement of inside diameters, slot widths, hole sizes, and similar internal dimensions. The tapered leaves allow the tool to be inserted into a gap and read the measurement where the leaves contact the workpiece walls. Constructed from spring tempered steel, the gage measures from 0.063 inches (1/16 inch) up to 1.063 inches (1-1/16 inch) with 1/64-inch graduations. The overall blade length is 5.25 inches and the blade width is 1 inch. Machinists, HVAC technicians, plumbers, and pipe fitters use this tool to verify tubing IDs, set calipers, and check clearances during fabrication or service work.
The STARRETT 51286 suits trade and shop environments where quick, repeatable inside-dimension checks are needed without setting up a bore gauge or dial indicator. Typical applications include checking tubing inside diameters, verifying slot widths in metal or plastic components, confirming hole sizes before fitting hardware, and setting jaw calipers to a known dimension. The compact size and multi-leaf design make it practical for use in tight access areas on mechanical systems.
General-purpose taper gage suitable for use in machine shops, HVAC service, plumbing, and light fabrication wherever inside-diameter or gap measurements in the 1/16-inch to 1-1/16-inch range are required.
No installation is required for this hand tool. Insert the tapered leaves into the opening to be measured until light resistance is felt, then read the graduation at the edge of the measured surface. Do not force the gage beyond its maximum range of 1.063 inches, as this can distort the spring tempered leaves. Clean and dry the leaves after use to prevent corrosion.
