The STARRETT 12221 is an electronic height gage designed for precise vertical measurement in machining, inspection, and layout work. It delivers a resolution of 0.0005 inches and an accuracy of 0.001 inches, making it suitable for close-tolerance measurement tasks on surface plates and machine tables. The unit features an easy-to-read LCD display and supports both inch and millimeter measurement modes, allowing technicians to switch units without re-zeroing. A lapped base ensures stable, repeatable contact with the reference surface. The gage is powered by a single CR2032 battery, which is included. Machinists, quality control inspectors, and toolroom technicians are the primary users of this instrument.
The STARRETT 12221 is used in toolrooms, machine shops, quality inspection departments, and production environments where accurate vertical height measurement is required. It is suited for surface plate work, part layout, and comparative measurement of machined components. The fine adjustment feature allows controlled, precise positioning of the scriber. The lock function holds the set measurement, enabling repeatable checks across multiple parts without drift. The rounded nose scriber reduces the risk of marking or damaging finished surfaces during contact measurement.
Designed for use as a standard electronic height gage on surface plates and flat reference surfaces in toolroom and inspection applications.
Setup is performed by a machinist or metrology technician on a clean, flat surface plate. Ensure the lapped base and reference surface are free of chips, burrs, and debris before use, as contamination will affect measurement accuracy. No electrical power-down or lockout procedure is required, but the manual on/off switch should be used to conserve battery life when the gage is not in active use. Do not apply side loads to the scriber column, as this can affect zero reference and long-term accuracy.
