The STARRETT 00517 is a high speed steel (HSS) hole saw designed for cutting through metal, steel, and wood in demanding trade and jobsite applications. With a 3.5-inch saw diameter and a cutting depth of 1.625 inches, it handles a wide range of through-hole and deep-set cuts. The toothed cutting edge runs at a constant pitch of 5.5 teeth per inch (TPI), delivering consistent chip removal and a clean bore. Electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, and general contractors rely on this style of hole saw when running conduit, pipe, or ductwork penetrations through structural materials.
The 00517 is suited for residential and light commercial installations where the operator needs to cut accurate-diameter holes in metal panels, steel studs, wood framing, and similar substrates. Its 3.5-inch diameter makes it a common choice for larger pipe and conduit pass-throughs. The 1.625-inch cutting depth accommodates standard wall and panel thicknesses encountered in typical mechanical and electrical rough-in work.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement hole saw for use with standard hole saw arbors accepting 3.5-inch diameter blades.
Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician, plumber, or HVAC technician following applicable NEC, IPC, or IFGC requirements for penetration locations and fire-stopping. Secure the workpiece before cutting and use appropriate RPM settings for the material being cut — lower speeds are recommended for metal substrates. Always wear eye protection and ensure the arbor pilot bit is properly seated before beginning a cut. Remove the plug from the saw teeth after each cut to prevent binding.
