Square D A.59 Thermal Unit is designed for the protection of motors, controllers, and branch circuit conductors. It safeguards against excessive heating caused by prolonged motor overcurrents, including locked rotor currents. This thermal unit effectively trips on overload conditions within twenty seconds. Proper selection based on the motor's full-load current is essential. These units feature one-piece construction, where motor current flows through a small heater winding. Under overload, heat generated melts a special solder, allowing a ratchet wheel to turn, which opens the control circuit contacts and deactivates the motor contacts.
