The SPI Z3999 is a disc-type coordinate measuring machine (CMM) stylus designed for probing applications that require lateral contact with a workpiece feature. The disc geometry allows the stylus to reach undercuts, grooves, and recessed surfaces that a standard spherical stylus cannot access. It mounts via an M2 thread on both the stylus and probe ends, making it compatible with standard M2 CMM probe connections. The contact point is steel, suited for general-purpose dimensional inspection tasks. The 3 mm ball diameter and 13 mm overall length make this a compact option for tight-access measurement setups. CMM technicians and quality control inspectors are the primary users of this component.
The Z3999 is used in dimensional inspection and quality assurance environments, including machine shops, manufacturing cells, and metrology labs. The disc stylus configuration is particularly valuable when measuring internal grooves, ring grooves, undercut diameters, or similar features where the probe must approach from the side rather than from above. It is appropriate for use in both manual and CNC CMM setups. This stylus is sold individually and is intended for direct replacement or expansion of a CMM stylus kit.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement or addition for CMM setups using M2-threaded probe heads and M2-threaded stylus extensions. Consult your CMM manufacturer documentation to confirm M2 thread compatibility before installation.
Installation of CMM styli should be performed by a qualified CMM technician or metrologist familiar with the specific CMM system in use. Power down or place the CMM in a safe parked position before handling any probe or stylus components to avoid accidental collision damage. Use a calibrated stylus wrench if required by the probe manufacturer and do not overtighten, as M2 threaded connections are susceptible to thread damage under excessive torque. After installation, run the appropriate qualification routine on the CMM controller to calibrate the new stylus before taking production measurements.
