The SPI AA is a mechanical edge finder designed for use on milling machines, drill presses, and machining centers to precisely locate the edge of a workpiece. With a 0.2-inch cylindrical contact head and a 3/8-inch shank diameter, it fits standard toolholders and collet chucks common in manual and CNC milling setups. The single-end design uses a mechanical actuation method and provides an audible alert when the contact tip deflects at the workpiece edge, giving the operator a clear, repeatable signal at the point of edge contact. Weighing 0.25 pounds, it is compact and easy to handle during setup operations.
This edge finder is suited for job shops, toolrooms, and production machining environments where accurate workpiece datum location is required before cutting operations begin. It is used by machinists and CNC operators to establish X and Y zero points on a workpiece. The mechanical, non-powered design means no batteries or external power source is required, making it straightforward to deploy in any shop environment with standard milling or drilling equipment.
Designed for use in standard 3/8-inch collets and toolholders on manual mills, knee mills, and CNC milling machines requiring mechanical edge-finding capability.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC operator. Insert the 3/8-inch shank into a compatible collet or toolholder and tighten to the machine manufacturer's specified holding torque before use. Power down the spindle drive and confirm the spindle is at a safe low RPM setting appropriate for edge-finding operations before contacting the workpiece. Do not run the edge finder at high spindle speeds, as excessive RPM can damage the contact tip and produce inaccurate readings.
