The SPI 98-454-2 is a matched pair of hardened steel machinist parallels designed for precision setup and workholding applications in machine shops and tool rooms. Each parallel features four precision-ground faces, giving technicians multiple reference surfaces for consistent, accurate positioning of workpieces on mills, grinders, and surface plates. At 6 inches long, 7/8 inch high, and 1/8 inch thick, these are slender, stackable parallels well suited for low-clearance setups. Hardness is rated at 50 Rc, and squareness is held to 0.0005 inches per 1 inch, making them appropriate for close-tolerance work.
These parallels are used in metalworking environments where accurate part elevation and alignment are required. Common applications include vise setup on vertical mills, surface grinding fixture support, and layout work on granite or cast-iron surface plates. They are sold as a matched pair and are appropriate for use by machinists, toolmakers, and precision grinding technicians in both job-shop and production environments.
Designed as a general-purpose precision parallel for use with standard machinist vises, surface grinders, and mill setups requiring a 6-inch parallel in 1/8 inch thickness.
These parallels are placed by machinists or toolmakers during workpiece setup; no power tools or mechanical fastening is required. Surfaces should be clean and free of chips or burrs before placing parallels to avoid false seating. Handle with care to avoid impact damage that could affect ground surfaces. Inspect periodically for nicks or corrosion that may compromise accuracy.
