The SPI 98-328-8 is a mechanical edge finder designed for locating workpiece edges and reference points on milling machines and machining centers. It operates without batteries or electronic components, relying on mechanical deflection to signal contact with a workpiece edge. The head diameter is 10 mm and the shank diameter is 10 mm, making it compatible with standard collets and tool holders of that bore size. The cylindrical contact head provides consistent, repeatable results on flat and square workpiece surfaces. This tool is a standard item in the setup toolkit for machinists and CNC operators performing part location and datum establishment.
The 98-328-8 is suited for use in vertical mills, knee mills, and CNC machining centers where accurate workpiece edge location is required before cutting operations begin. It is appropriate for job shop, production, and toolroom environments. Single-end construction focuses the full tool length on one contact point, keeping overall tool length manageable in machines with limited Z-axis clearance. Machinists use this edge finder during setup to locate part zero on the machine control.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or standard toolroom edge finder for use in any milling machine or machining center equipped with a collet or toolholder that accepts a 10 mm shank diameter.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC setup technician. The shank is loaded into a collet or toolholder and tightened securely before spindle rotation. The machine spindle should be set to a low RPM appropriate for mechanical edge finder operation per the machine tool manufacturer guidelines. Do not apply cutting forces to the edge finder head, and remove the tool from the spindle before beginning any cutting operation.
