The SPI 20-980-9 is a ball-style contact point designed for use with dial indicators in precision measurement applications. Machined from chrome alloy steel, this contact point features a 1/4-inch ball diameter and a 0.75-inch contact point length. It threads onto AGD Group 1 dial indicators via a standard 4-48 thread. Dimensional inspection professionals, machinists, and calibration technicians install these contact points when swapping stylus types for different workpiece geometries or surface conditions. The chrome alloy steel construction provides the hardness and wear resistance needed for repeated contact against metal workpieces without significant tip deformation.
This contact point is suited for use in machine shops, tool rooms, and inspection departments where dial indicators are used for runout checks, surface comparisons, bore gauging, and similar dimensional measurement tasks. The ball-style tip is particularly useful on curved or irregular surfaces where a flat or pointed contact would give inconsistent readings. It meets AGD Group 1 dimensional standards, making it a straightforward replacement or supplemental stylus for compatible indicator setups.
Designed for use with dial indicators meeting AGD Group 1 specifications with a standard 4-48 thread contact point mounting.
Installation is performed by hand-threading the contact point into the dial indicator spindle tip — no special tools are required. Ensure the indicator is removed from active service before swapping contact points to avoid measurement errors or damage to the spindle. Thread engagement should be snug but not overtightened, as the 4-48 thread on indicator spindles can be damaged by excessive force. Verify the replacement contact point is fully seated and the indicator reads zero on a known reference surface before returning the instrument to service.
