The SPI 20-310-9 is a steel ball contact point designed for use with dial test indicators in precision measurement applications. The spherical tip measures 0.078 inches in diameter and the overall contact point length is 1.336 inches, providing the geometry needed for accurate surface contact during runout, alignment, and deflection checks. The steel construction delivers the hardness and dimensional stability required in shop-floor and inspection environments. Machinists, quality control technicians, and metrology professionals install this type of contact point as a direct replacement or alternate-geometry tip on compatible test indicators.
This contact point is suited for use in machine shops, toolrooms, and inspection departments where test indicators are mounted on magnetic bases, height gages, or indicator holders for measuring part geometry, surface deviation, or fixture alignment. The ball-style tip is particularly useful when contacting curved or angled surfaces, where a flat or pointed contact would produce inconsistent readings. It threads onto the indicator spindle to replace worn or damaged factory-installed tips.
Designed for use with Mitutoyo test indicators, as stated in the product specifications. Verify thread size and spindle configuration against your specific indicator model before installation.
Installation is performed by a machinist or metrology technician familiar with dial test indicator maintenance. Remove the existing contact point by unscrewing it from the indicator spindle, taking care not to apply side load to the spindle during removal or installation. Thread the replacement contact point in by hand until snug, then verify indicator zero before returning the instrument to service. Avoid over-tightening, which can damage the spindle thread on the indicator body.
