The SPI 14-440-2 is a nickel surface finish comparator used to visually and tactilely assess machined surface texture against known reference standards. It contains 8 specimens spanning a range of 0.025 to 3.2 Ra micrometers, which corresponds to 1 to 125 AA microinches. Technicians, machinists, and quality control inspectors use this tool to compare a workpiece surface against calibrated specimens, eliminating the need for a profilometer during routine checks. The comparator is compact at 2.5 inches in length by 5 inches in width and weighs approximately 0.25 pounds, making it easy to carry to the machine or inspection area.
This comparator is suited for use in machine shops, manufacturing facilities, and inspection environments where surface finish verification is part of standard quality assurance workflow. It is designed for surfaces produced by grinding processes. The eight specimen values cover 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 63, and 125 AA microinches, giving inspectors a practical spread for evaluating typical production finishes. Designed as a reference tool for inspecting ground surfaces in accordance with ANSI B46.1-1978, Military Specifications 45662, and SAE surface finish standards.
No installation is required for this inspection tool. Store specimens in the included case to prevent surface contamination or damage that could compromise reference accuracy. Handle specimens with care; oils and debris from bare hands can alter the tactile reference surface. Calibration verification should follow your facility quality management procedures as applicable.
