The SOUTHWIRE P40073-1D is an 18 AWG, 4-conductor shielded automation communication cable designed for low-voltage control and data signaling applications in building automation and HVAC control systems. The cable features bare copper conductors with PVC insulation and a PVC outer jacket, with an overall outside diameter of 0.198 inches. The shield provides protection against electromagnetic interference, making this cable well suited for runs between controllers, sensors, and field devices where signal integrity is critical. This product is sold in 1-foot increments with a minimum cut length of 100 feet from a 500-foot total coil.
This cable is used in residential and commercial building automation systems, including HVAC DDC controls, thermostat wiring, and low-voltage signaling circuits. It is appropriate for plenum-rated installations where UL Type CMP classification is required, and it meets NEC Article 725 requirements for Class 3 power-limited circuits. Licensed HVAC technicians, controls contractors, and low-voltage electricians are the primary installers. The beige jacket color aids identification in multi-cable conduit runs.

Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician or qualified low-voltage controls contractor in accordance with NEC Article 725 and local authority having jurisdiction requirements. De-energize all connected control circuits before terminating or splicing. When routing through plenum air-handling spaces, verify that the CMP rating is acceptable per the local adopted code edition. Avoid sharp bends and stapling through the jacket, which can compromise the shield continuity and signal performance.
