The SOUTHWIRE 871 is a 1/2-inch watertight connector designed to secure UF (underground feeder) cable at enclosure knockouts while maintaining a weatherproof seal. The connector body is zinc die-cast construction with an internal rubber grommet that compresses around the cable jacket to block moisture, dust, and debris. It is sized for 1/2-inch knockouts, which are among the most common in residential and light commercial electrical panels, junction boxes, and weatherproof enclosures. Licensed electricians and electrical contractors install this fitting during rough-in and service work wherever UF cable enters a metal or non-metallic enclosure requiring a watertight termination.
This connector is suited for residential outdoor wiring runs, underground feeder installations, and any application where NEC requirements call for a watertight fitting at the point of entry into an enclosure. Typical install scenarios include exterior sub-panels, weatherproof junction boxes, meter bases, and landscape lighting supply circuits. The 1/2-inch trade size aligns with standard conduit and knockout sizing used across a wide range of electrical enclosures in both new construction and retrofit work.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-fit connector for 1/2-inch knockout openings on residential and light commercial electrical enclosures accepting UF cable.
Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with the NEC and applicable local codes. De-energize the circuit and verify zero voltage before working at any enclosure. Insert the connector through the knockout from outside the box, secure the locknut firmly by hand then snug with lineman pliers, and confirm the rubber grommet seats evenly around the cable jacket to maintain the watertight rating. Do not over-torque the locknut, as this can crack the zinc body or distort the grommet seal.
