The SOUTHWIRE 18/5cl2 is a solid-conductor, Class 2 (CL2) rated thermostat cable designed for low-voltage control wiring in residential and light commercial HVAC systems. Constructed with 18 AWG solid copper conductors in a 5-conductor configuration, it is sheathed in PVC insulation and carries a CL2 rating, making it suitable for in-wall installations where Class 2 wiring methods are required. Each reel contains 250 feet of cable, providing enough footage for most new-construction rough-ins or larger replacement runs. HVAC technicians and low-voltage control wiring installers are the primary trades that work with this product.
This thermostat cable is used to connect thermostats to HVAC control boards, air handlers, heat pumps, and zone controllers in residential and light commercial applications. The 5-conductor layout supports systems requiring separate wires for heating, cooling, fan, common, and an additional function such as a reversing valve or auxiliary heat stage. The 250-foot reel format suits both single-run installations and multiple shorter runs pulled from a common spool on the job site.
Designed as a standard replacement and new-installation thermostat cable for residential and light commercial HVAC control wiring applications requiring 18 AWG 5-conductor CL2-rated cable.
Installation should be performed by a qualified HVAC technician or licensed low-voltage wiring contractor in accordance with NEC Article 725 Class 2 wiring requirements. Always power down the HVAC system and thermostat circuit at the breaker before connecting or disconnecting thermostat wiring. Avoid routing thermostat cable parallel to line-voltage wiring for extended runs, as induced interference can affect control signal integrity. Secure cable at appropriate intervals per local code requirements and avoid sharp bends that could damage conductors.
