The SOUTHWARK METAL 85r84127 is an insulated ceiling box designed for use in HVAC duct distribution systems where a ceiling register or diffuser mounts to an overhead plenum or duct run. The box measures 4 inches by 12 inches by 7 inches and ships with R8 insulation, equivalent to 2 inches of insulation thickness. The outer shell and collar are fabricated from hot-dipped galvanized steel conforming to ASTM A653 CS Type B, with the box body at 30 gauge and the collar at 28 gauge. A 2-inch flange and a 1/2-inch drywall flange allow flush, secure mounting in finished ceilings. The 3-inch long collar with bead provides a positive register or diffuser seat. Sheet metal workers and HVAC installers use this box in residential and light commercial construction.
This ceiling box is suited for residential new construction and retrofit applications where insulated distribution boxes are required at ceiling register locations. The R8 insulation rating meets energy code requirements in climate zones where higher insulation values are mandated for duct components outside conditioned space. The top outlet configuration allows the box to connect directly to a supply duct dropping from above, while the bottom flange aligns with standard drywall ceiling finishes. The unit is sold individually.
Designed as an OEM-style ceiling box for residential and light commercial HVAC supply air distribution at ceiling register locations. Also available in R4 and R6 insulation versions within the Southwark Metal Model 85 series.
Installation is typically performed by licensed sheet metal workers or HVAC technicians. The supply air system should be shut down and the air handler de-energized before cutting into existing ductwork or framing a new opening. Follow local mechanical and energy codes for duct insulation requirements, box support, and ceiling penetration firestopping where applicable. Do not compress the insulation lining during installation, as compression reduces the effective R-value.
