The SOUTHWARK METAL 1701620r8 is a Model 170 return air box constructed from hot-dipped galvanized steel per ASTM A653 CS Type B at 26 gauge. It is designed to collect return air from a conditioned space and direct it back to the air handler or furnace. This unit ships without a flange and features R8 insulation lining to reduce thermal loss and limit condensation on the exterior of the box. It measures 16 inches by 20 inches face with an 8-inch depth. HVAC technicians install this box as part of a residential or light-commercial forced-air ducting system, typically during new construction or a return-air duct retrofit.
This return air box is suited for residential and light-commercial forced-air HVAC applications where a plenum-side return air inlet is required. The no-flange configuration is used when the installer will field-fabricate the connection or when the rough-in opening is designed to accept a flangeless box. The 8-inch depth is the standard offering. The R8 insulation rating makes it appropriate for unconditioned spaces such as attics, crawlspaces, and garages where thermal performance requirements are higher than standard R4 or R6 boxes.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation return air box for residential and light-commercial forced-air HVAC duct systems requiring a 16-inch by 20-inch inlet opening with 8-inch depth.
Return air boxes are installed by licensed HVAC technicians and should be fitted per local mechanical codes and ACCA Manual D duct design guidelines. Power down the air handler or furnace at the disconnect before making any duct connections. Seal all seams and joints with listed duct sealant or mastic to prevent air leakage that would reduce system efficiency. Do not compress or puncture the insulation lining during installation, as this degrades the R-value.
