The SIMPSON STRONG-TIE PSPN58Z is a 16-gauge galvanized steel protective nail plate designed to shield pipes and conduit from nail and screw penetration when routed through wall framing members. Installed flush against a stud or plate face, it creates a physical barrier that stops fasteners from piercing supply and drain lines, refrigerant tubing, or low-voltage wiring concealed in the wall cavity. This plate meets IBC, IRC, UBC, and City of Los Angeles code requirements for pipe and HVAC protection in wall assemblies. It is available with ZMAX coating for added corrosion resistance in higher-moisture environments.
This nail plate is used in residential and light commercial construction and service work wherever pipes, refrigerant lines, or conduit pass through studs or top and bottom plates at a depth that places them within striking distance of drywall fasteners. Typical applications include HVAC refrigerant line sets, PEX or copper water supply lines, drain lines, and low-voltage wiring runs that cannot maintain the minimum clearance distance required by code. Plumbers, HVAC technicians, and electricians install these plates as a required code compliance measure during rough-in.
Designed for use with pipes, refrigerant tubing, and conduit routed through wood framing members in wall, floor, and ceiling assemblies where code-required penetration protection applies.
Installation is typically performed by licensed plumbers, HVAC technicians, or electricians during the rough-in phase before drywall is applied. The plate is fastened directly to the face of the stud or framing member over the pipe or conduit using 16d common hot-dip galvanized nails. Shut off and depressurize any lines in the immediate work area before securing the plate. Verify local code requirements for plate size and placement, as minimum coverage dimensions are specified under IBC, IRC, and UBC provisions.
