The SIMPSON STRONG-TIE ABA44Z is an adjustable post base designed for 4x4 lumber applications where moisture protection and a finished hardware appearance are required. Constructed from Z-MAX galvanized coated steel, this post base provides a 1-inch standoff height above concrete, keeping post and column ends elevated to reduce the potential for decay. This standoff height meets code requirements for permanent structures exposed to weather, water splash, or basement conditions. Licensed contractors and framing carpenters install this hardware in residential and light commercial construction as part of code-compliant post-to-foundation connections.
The ABA44Z is suited for use in residential decks, covered patios, carports with top support, and interior basement post installations where moisture exposure is a concern. The adjustable design allows the post to be positioned before final fastening, simplifying layout and alignment during installation. Note that post bases of this type do not provide adequate resistance to rotational movement and are not recommended for non-top-supported installations such as fences or unbraced carports. Installation uses nails or Strong-Drive SD Connector screws through the provided fastener holes.
Designed as an OEM-style post base for 4x4 nominal lumber posts in residential and light commercial framing applications requiring adjustable, moisture-resistant post-to-concrete connections.
Installation should be performed by a qualified contractor or framing carpenter familiar with applicable building codes, including IRC requirements for connectors used in exposed or wet locations. Anchor the base plate to concrete before setting the post, and fasten through all provided holes using the specified fastener type to achieve rated load values. This post base is not rated for non-top-supported applications such as fences or unbraced carports. Verify local code requirements for fastener type and quantity prior to installation.
