The SharkBite UP138A5 is a 5-pack of poly alloy PEX barb insert adapters designed for cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) tubing installations in residential and light commercial plumbing systems. Each fitting features a 3/4-inch poly alloy barb insert on one end and a 1/2-inch poly alloy male pipe thread on the other, allowing techs to transition from PEX tubing to threaded fittings or valves. Constructed from NSF-listed poly alloy material, these inserts serve as a code-compliant alternative to standard brass PEX insert fittings. After crimping, each fitting can be immediately pressure-tested to well over 100 psi.

These adapters are suited for hot and cold water distribution lines in residential construction, remodel, and repair work. They are intended for use with cinch clamp systems or copper crimp rings on cross-linked PEX tubing. Compatible cinch clamps and the required cinch tool are sold separately. The poly alloy construction meets NSF listing requirements and is specified as a brass insert fitting replacement where local codes require non-metallic fittings.

Installation Notes

Installation is performed by licensed plumbers in accordance with applicable local plumbing codes and IPC guidelines. Shut off the water supply and depressurize the line before cutting into existing tubing. A calibrated PEX cinch tool or copper crimp ring tool is required — hand-tightening alone does not create a code-compliant connection. After crimping, pressure-test each fitting before closing walls or concealing the installation.
