The SGS 77218 is a solid carbide corner radius end mill engineered for high-performance finishing operations in demanding materials. Part of the SGS Series 77C, it features a 5/8 inch mill diameter, 7 flutes, and a 0.06 inch corner radius that reduces stress concentrations and extends tool life in hardened and abrasive workpieces. The AlTiN coating — designated Ti-NAMITE-A by SGS — provides high heat resistance and oxidation protection, making this tool well suited for dry or semi-dry cutting conditions. A variable index flute geometry with a high helix angle and close pitch promotes smooth chip evacuation and reduces chatter during finishing passes. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production shops or tool rooms install this end mill in standard end mill holders.
This end mill is designed for finishing applications in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium, as well as secondary use in hard materials. The 1-9/16 inch length of cut and 3-3/4 inch overall length make it appropriate for moderate-depth pocket and profile milling where corner geometry and surface finish tolerance are critical. The right-hand cut, right-hand flute direction, and straight-cylindrical shank suit standard end mill holder setups on vertical and horizontal machining centers. The chipbreaker geometry aids swarf control during long-run finishing operations.
Designed for use with standard end mill holders. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium; rated for secondary use in hard materials. Not center-cutting — not intended for plunge entry.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing tooling. Seat the straight-cylindrical shank fully into the end mill holder and torque the retention hardware per the holder manufacturer specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before committing to a finishing pass, as corner radius end mills are sensitive to runout-induced chatter and premature edge wear.
