The SGS 70487 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for high-performance milling in demanding production environments. Built on the Series 7 platform, it features a 3/4 inch cutting diameter, a 3 inch length of cut, and a 6 inch overall length with a straight cylindrical shank. The AlTiN coating improves heat resistance and extends tool life when cutting harder alloy steels, stainless, titanium, and high-temp alloys. Four spiral flutes with a 38-degree helix angle and variable index geometry reduce chatter and improve chip evacuation. Micrograin carbide substrate provides the hardness and edge retention needed for aggressive material removal at elevated feed rates.
This end mill is suited for CNC machining centers handling steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and exotic alloys, corresponding to ISO material groups H, K, M, P, and S. The extra-long configuration and 3 inch length of cut make it appropriate for deep-pocket milling, cavity work, and side milling where reach beyond standard lengths is required. The centercutting geometry allows for direct plunging. Right-hand cut and right-hand flute orientation is standard. A licensed machinist or CNC programmer typically selects and sets up this tooling in a production shop environment.

Installation and tool changes must be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine spindle fully stopped and control in a safe state. Use a torque-rated toolholder appropriate for 3/4 inch straight shank tooling and verify runout after seating. Confirm cutting parameters including spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut against published speeds and feeds for the specific workpiece material before initiating the cut. Do not exceed the recommended length of cut for side milling passes without verifying deflection limits.
