The SGS 70460 is a 4-flute, solid carbide ball end mill engineered for high-performance finishing operations in demanding machining environments. With a 0.5-inch mill diameter, a 3-inch length of cut, and a 6-inch overall length, this extra-long tool reaches deep pockets and contoured surfaces where standard-length end mills fall short. The 45-degree high helix geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation and reduces cutting forces. An AlTiN coating extends tool life in elevated-temperature applications. Manufactured from micrograin carbide, the 70460 maintains edge sharpness through extended production runs. Licensed machinists and CNC programmers typically specify this tool for finish-pass work on hardened steels, stainless, titanium, and high-temperature alloys.
The SGS 70460 is suited for CNC machining centers running finishing passes on complex 3D contours, mold cavities, and deep-pocket profiles. Its extra-long reach makes it appropriate for aerospace, die-and-mold, and precision component work where tool length-to-diameter ratios are critical. The variable index geometry helps suppress chatter during finish cuts at high spindle speeds. It is a single-end tool with right-hand cutting and right-hand flute direction, compatible with standard ER and side-lock holders accepting a 0.5-inch shank.
Designed for use with materials coded H, K, M, P, and S per ISO workpiece material classification, covering hardened steels, cast iron, stainless steels, carbon steels, and high-temperature alloys including titanium. Accepts standard 0.5-inch bore toolholders. Part of the SGS Series 7B extra-long ball end mill family.
Installation should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is at a full stop and the tool changer is in a safe state before loading or removing the tool. Verify holder runout with a dial indicator before beginning a finishing operation, as runout directly affects surface finish quality and tool life on micrograin carbide end mills. Consult the machine tool builder guidelines and applicable shop safety procedures when setting tool length offsets for extra-long reach tools.
