Product Description

The SGS 63172 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding materials including alloy steels and titanium. It features a 5.80 mm (0.2283 inch) diameter, a 145-degree notched point, and an AlTiN (Ti-NAMITE-A) coating that improves heat resistance and extends tool life in abrasive and high-temperature cutting environments. With an overall length of 66.00 mm (2.5984 inches) and a flute length of 28.00 mm, this bit is built for short-reach precision work in production machining and metalworking applications. It is installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals using compatible CNC or manual drill press setups.

This drill bit is suited for production and job shop environments where consistent hole quality in tough workpiece materials is required. The screw machine length format provides added rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, reducing deflection in short-bore applications. The Series 135M designation places it within SGS's lineup engineered for alloy and titanium workpieces. Its 3xD flute-to-diameter ratio and web-thinned, tapered web configuration support chip evacuation and reduce entry force in ferrous and non-ferrous high-strength materials.

Key Features

  • Solid carbide construction for rigidity and wear resistance in hard and abrasive materials
  • AlTiN (Ti-NAMITE-A) coating provides heat resistance and extends tool life in titanium and alloy steel
  • 145-degree notched point reduces thrust force and improves self-centering on entry
  • Web-thinned, tapered web configuration promotes efficient chip evacuation
  • Straight shank with 6.00 mm (0.2362 inch) shank diameter fits standard collet and drill chuck toolholders
  • Right-hand cut, regular spiral flute for conventional drilling operations
  • Screw machine length format delivers increased rigidity and reduced deflection in short-reach setups

Compatibility

Designed for drilling alloy steels and titanium workpieces. The 6.00 mm straight shank is compatible with standard ER collets, keyless chucks, and drill press toolholders accepting that shank diameter. Confirm toolholder bore and gripping range before installation.

Installation Notes

This bit is installed by machinists in CNC machining centers, drill presses, or manual machine tools. Ensure the spindle and toolholder are clean and free of runout before seating the shank. Power down and lock out the machine before changing tooling per standard shop safety practice. Do not exceed the maximum recommended drilling depth of 20.00 mm per pass without retracting to clear chips.
