The SGS 56109 is a straight-flute solid carbide drill bit designed for precision drilling in ferrous and hardened materials. Built to DIN 6539 standards, this 2-flute bit features a 140-degree point angle with web thinning for improved centering and reduced thrust on entry. The micrograin carbide construction provides the hardness and wear resistance needed for demanding production environments. At 0.1406 inches in diameter with a tolerance of +0.0000 to -0.0005 inches, the 56109 holds tight dimensional tolerances expected in precision machining and fabrication work. Licensed machinists, tool and die technicians, and CNC operators are the primary users of this bit.
The SGS 56109 is suited for drilling cast iron, steel, and hardened steels where high-speed steel tooling loses its edge prematurely. The straight-flute geometry makes it particularly effective in materials that produce broken or powdery chips rather than long stringy ones, reducing clogging risk during the cut. With a maximum recommended drilling depth of 0.75 inches and a 0.9375-inch flute length, it fits typical short-hole drilling applications on mills, drill presses, and CNC machining centers in both job shop and production settings.
Designed for use in drilling cast iron, hardened steel, and steel workpieces. Also rated for secondary use in other hardened materials. Compatible with standard drill chucks and collet systems accepting a 0.1406-inch shank diameter.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians familiar with carbide tooling requirements. Carbide bits are brittle compared to high-speed steel — avoid side loads, interrupted cuts without proper feed control, and dropping the tool on hard surfaces. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling, and verify spindle runout is within acceptable limits to protect the cutting edge. Use appropriate cutting fluid or mist coolant for the workpiece material when cycle times or depths approach tooling limits.
