The SGS 56048 is a straight-flute, solid carbide drill bit designed for precision drilling in ferrous and hardened materials. Ground to wire size 48 (0.0760 inches diameter), it features a 140-degree standard point with web thinning for improved chisel edge performance and reduced thrust at entry. The micrograin carbide construction delivers the hardness and wear resistance needed for productive cutting in cast iron, steel, and hardened steel. At 1.6875 inches overall length with a 0.6875-inch flute length, the 56048 is built for short, controlled-depth applications where rigidity and dimensional accuracy matter. Cutting direction is right hand, and coolant-through is not supported.
This drill bit is suited for machine-shop and production environments where tight-tolerance hole sizing in hard ferrous workpieces is required. The straight-flute geometry makes it appropriate for drilling brittle materials such as cast iron, where chip evacuation dynamics differ from spiral-flute designs. It is also used in applications involving hardened steel and other hardened materials where carbide tooling is required over high-speed steel alternatives. The 0.6875-inch flute length limits maximum drilling depth to approximately 0.547 inches, making this bit best applied to shallow, precise bores.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and precision hand-operated spindles capable of holding a 0.0760-inch shank. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron, steel, and hardened steel; secondary workpiece materials include hardened materials per DIN 6539.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tool-and-die professionals familiar with small-diameter carbide tooling. Secure the shank fully in a collet or chuck rated for the shank diameter before initiating spindle rotation. Carbide bits are brittle — avoid side loading, interrupted cuts without appropriate feed rate reduction, and any flexing of the tool during setup. Confirm spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material and drill diameter before cutting.
