The SGS 56020 is a straight-flute carbide drill bit designed for precision drilling in ferrous and hard materials. Built to Series 106 standards and conforming to DIN 6539, it features a 140-degree standard point angle and a web-thinned tip geometry that reduces thrust and improves centering on entry. The bit is sized to wire gauge number 20 (0.1610 inches diameter) with a 2-flute right-hand cutting configuration. Flute length is 1.0625 inches and overall length is 2.125 inches. The micrograin carbide construction without coating keeps tolerances tight at +0.0000 to -0.0005 inches on the cutting diameter. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary users.
This drill bit is suited for production and maintenance drilling in cast iron, hardened steel, and general steel workpieces. Secondary applications include hardened materials where a standard high-speed steel bit would lose edge integrity quickly. The straight-flute design is preferred over spiral flutes when drilling brittle materials like cast iron because chip evacuation is lateral rather than helical, reducing the risk of workpiece cracking. Maximum recommended drilling depth is 0.859 inches, consistent with the 3xD flute-to-diameter ratio of the Series 106 geometry. It is packaged individually and sold as a single unit.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use carbide straight-flute drill bit for standard drill chucks and CNC toolholders accepting a 0.1610-inch round shank. Primary workpiece materials listed by the manufacturer are cast iron, hardened steel, and steel, with hardened materials as a secondary application.
This bit is intended for use by machinists and toolroom professionals operating drill presses, CNC machining centers, or hand-held drill equipment with a compatible chuck or collet. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and confirm runout is within acceptable limits for the hole tolerance required. Do not exceed the maximum drilling depth of 0.859 inches without retracting to clear chips. No coolant-through capability is present on this tool; apply cutting fluid externally when drilling hardened or abrasive materials.
