The SGS 54617 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit sized at Letter Q (0.3320 inches) with a 124-degree drill point angle. Built from micrograin solid carbide with a bright/uncoated finish, it delivers high performance in short, rigid setups where stub-length rigidity is required. The three-flute, helical parabolic flute geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation. Overall length is 3.5040 inches with a flute length of 1.8504 inches. The straight cylindrical shank and tapered web configuration support accurate positioning and reduced deflection at the cut. This bit is suited for professional machinists and metalworking tradespeople running production or jobsite drilling operations.
The 54617 is engineered for drilling aluminum and non-ferrous metals. Its 124-degree special point geometry and three-margin design make it well-matched for materials that demand clean entry and controlled chip flow. The screw machine length format fits standard drill chucks and short-travel spindles commonly found in drill presses, CNC machining centers, and manual lathes. Maximum drilling depth is 1.8500 inches, making it appropriate for through-hole and moderate blind-hole applications in aluminum plate, bar stock, and extrusions.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks and collet systems accepting straight cylindrical shanks in the 0.3000 to 0.3500 inch diameter range. Primary workpiece materials are aluminum and non-ferrous metals per SGS Series 131N specification.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists familiar with carbide tooling. Secure the straight shank firmly in a properly sized collet or drill chuck before operation. Carbide tooling is brittle and susceptible to fracture from side loading or interrupted cuts — avoid lateral force during drilling. Ensure the workpiece is rigidly fixtured and the spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for carbide in the target material before starting the cut.
