The SGS 53131 is a solid carbide jobber length drill bit designed for precision hole-making in demanding materials. It features a 31/64 inch (0.4844 inch) diameter, a 150-degree point angle, and a three-flute regular spiral configuration that promotes efficient chip evacuation. The web-thinned, tapered web design reduces cutting resistance at entry. Built to DIN 6539 standards from micrograin carbide stock, this bit delivers dimensional accuracy within a tolerance of -0.0005 to 0.0000 inches. It is suited for machinists, toolroom operators, and production drilling applications where consistency and rigidity are required.
The SGS 53131 is intended for drilling cast iron, hardened steel, non-ferrous metals, and general steel in production and job shop environments. With a straight cylindrical shank and right-hand cut, it mounts directly into standard drill chucks, collet holders, and toolholders without adapters. The 4.75-inch overall length and 3.0-inch flute length make it compatible with vertical machining centers, CNC drill presses, and manual drill presses where jobber-length tooling is specified. Coolant-through capability is not supported; flood or mist coolant at the periphery is the typical approach for heat-sensitive workpieces.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-application solid carbide jobber drill for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks and collet systems accepting a 0.4844 inch shank diameter; compatible with workpiece materials including cast iron, hardened steel, non-ferrous metal, and steel as specified by SGS Series 103.
Installation and use should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician familiar with rotating cutting tool safety practices. Always confirm the spindle and workpiece are fully secured and the machine is at a complete stop before loading or removing the bit. Verify chuck or collet runout is within acceptable limits before drilling, as excess runout accelerates carbide wear and can cause bit fracture. Solid carbide tooling is brittle and should not be subjected to side loads or interrupted cuts beyond the material ratings stated by the manufacturer.
