Product Description

The SGS 53017 is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit in wire gauge size No. 17, with a decimal diameter of 0.1730 inches. Built to DIN 6539 standards, it features a 150-degree split point, three spiral flutes, and a web-thinned, tapered-web geometry that reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation. The micrograin carbide construction delivers the hardness and wear resistance needed for repetitive drilling into demanding materials. At 2.75 inches overall length with a 1.625-inch flute length, this bit fits standard jobber-length applications. It is installed and used by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance professionals working in production and repair environments.

The SGS 53017 is suited for drilling cast iron, hardened steel, steel, and non-ferrous metals. Its 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio and right-hand cutting direction make it a practical choice for CNC drilling centers, drill presses, and hand-held power tools where consistent hole diameter and clean entry are required. The straight cylindrical shank seats in standard three-jaw chucks and collet holders without modification. Maximum recommended drilling depth is 1.297 inches based on flute geometry.

Key Features

  • Solid micrograin carbide construction for high wear resistance in ferrous and non-ferrous materials
  • 150-degree point angle reduces thrust and improves self-centering on entry
  • Three-flute design improves chip clearance and surface finish in short-chipping materials such as cast iron
  • Web-thinned, tapered-web geometry lowers cutting force at the tip
  • Bright/uncoated finish suitable for use with or without coolant in general-purpose applications
  • Meets DIN 6539 dimensional standard for consistent interchangeability

Compatibility

Designed as an OEM-style replacement and general-purpose drilling tool compatible with standard straight-shank drill chucks and collet systems accepting a 0.1730-inch diameter shank. Rated for use in cast iron, hardened steel, non-ferrous metal, and steel workpieces per manufacturer specifications.

Installation Notes

Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with rotary cutting tool safety. Secure the straight cylindrical shank fully in the chuck or collet before operation and verify runout before drilling. Power down and lock out the machine before changing or inspecting the bit. Do not exceed the maximum drilling depth of 1.297 inches in a single pass without retracting to clear chips.
