The SGS 51072 is a solid carbide jobber length drill bit in wire gauge size No. 72, with a decimal diameter of 0.0250 inches (0.64 mm). It features a 118-degree faceted point angle with web thinning for reduced thrust and cleaner entry. The regular spiral flute design promotes chip evacuation during through-hole drilling. Built from micrograin solid carbide, it delivers consistent dimensional accuracy with a diameter tolerance of -0.0005 to 0.0000 inches. The bright uncoated finish is well suited for applications where coating interaction with the workpiece material is a concern. Machinists and precision fabricators working with composite materials are the primary installers of this bit.
This drill bit is designed for use in composite workpiece materials where tight hole tolerances and clean entry geometry are required. The 1.0 inch overall length and 5/16 inch flute length make it appropriate for shallow, precision drilling operations on circuit boards, carbon fiber laminates, fiberglass, and similar composite substrates. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard collet chucks and drill press spindles. Its compact jobber length format is commonly used in CNC machining centers and benchtop drill presses where short, rigid tooling is preferred for small-diameter work.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct tooling selection for applications requiring a wire gauge No. 72 jobber drill bit in solid carbide, conforming to DIN 338 geometry and Series 101 specifications.
Installation of this bit is performed by machinists and CNC operators working with precision drilling equipment. Ensure the spindle or collet chuck is fully de-energized and at rest before inserting or removing the bit. Use appropriate collet sizing to match the 0.0250-inch straight cylindrical shank and verify runout with a dial indicator before production drilling. Follow machine manufacturer guidelines for spindle speed and feed rate when drilling composites to avoid delamination or bit breakage.
