The SGS 51049 is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit in wire gauge size No. 49, with a decimal diameter of 0.073 inches (1.85 mm). Built to DIN 338 standards, it features a 118-degree faceted point and a regular right-hand spiral flute for consistent chip evacuation. Micrograin carbide construction provides the hardness and edge retention needed when drilling composites and other demanding materials. The bright, uncoated finish keeps tolerances tight, with a diameter tolerance of -0.0005 to 0.0000 inches. Overall length is 1-3/4 inches, making it suitable for close-quarters drilling work.
The SGS 51049 is intended for production and precision drilling applications where a standard high-speed steel bit would wear prematurely. It is particularly well suited for composite materials such as carbon fiber, fiberglass, and reinforced plastics, as well as other hard or abrasive substrates. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without modification. With a 7/8-inch flute length and a maximum drilling depth of 0.703 inches, this bit handles through-hole and blind-hole work in thin to medium stock. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and composite fabricators are the primary end users.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct substitute for No. 49 wire gauge jobber drill bits used in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and hand-held power tools equipped with a standard straight-shank chuck.
Installation of this bit should be performed by machinists or fabricators familiar with carbide tooling. Carbide is brittle compared to high-speed steel; avoid lateral loading, interrupted cuts without proper support, or excessive runout, all of which can cause chipping or fracture. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet and verify minimal runout before starting the cut. Always power down and de-energize the machine before changing tooling.
